Guests are on their way to a wonderful party to be held at the Silberhaus residence. They are met by a beautiful match girl who hands them flowers as they pass by. One of the guests is the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer, Clara Silberhaus’s godfather. The maids are busy making preparations for the party. Mr. and Mrs. Silberhaus greet each family as they arrive. Clara and Fritz Silberhaus are happy to see their friends, however Clara has a premonition that this will be an unusual holiday celebration!

The party begins with Fritz and the boys dancing, followed by Clara and the girls, then they dance together with joy. Clara and the girls again take center stage. The parents celebrate with a toast and a regal dance. Soon everyone is dancing!

Suddenly, Herr Drosselmeyer creates a flash of light! He delights the guests with his magic tricks. Drosselmeyer engages the children to guess what he has in store next. From a large container emerges life sized dolls. The children are curious, come closer, then the dolls begin to move! Three ballerina dolls dance beautifully, followed by a fiery dance by the Russian doll.

It’s time for presents. Drosselmeyer opens Fritz’s present as the other children open theirs. But Clara hasn’t received anything to open. Has Drosselmeyer forgotten about her? No, he has a special gift for Clara, a unique doll – but she doesn’t understand why it looks different. So he demonstrates to Clara and the children how its strong jaws can crack nuts open to eat. Clara loves her Nutcracker and does a happy dance, until Fritz takes the Nutcracker away from her and smashes it on the ground! Drosselmeyer comforts Clara and bandages the Nutcracker. It’s getting late, so the girls rock their dolls and protect them from the boys running around playing drums.

Frau and Herr Silberhaus lead the parents in a final dance while the maids join in behind them. The families gather their children and bid farewell to the Silberhaus parents. Drosselmeyer leaves last, bidding the Nutcracker a farewell wave of his cape…
