Clara tiptoes downstairs and falls asleep on the couch with her Nutcracker. Suddenly the sound of a mouse wakes Clara up. More mice appear, surrounding Clara and her Nutcracker. As the clock strikes midnight a Rat Queen and her rats appear and disappear. The mice scurry about until Drosselmeyer arrives, the mice retreat and the Christmas Tree grows and grows. Clara is not in her living room any more, but where is she? Drosselmeyer has turned her Nutcracker into a life sized Prince! The mice and Rat Queen return – can he save her?
(Note: in this year’s performance, there is a Mouse Queen instead of a Rat Queen) Soldiers have gathered near the tree in the dark to help the Nutcracker Prince defend against the mice. A battle ensues, it looks as if the mice are winning. The Mouse Queen and Nutcracker Prince are fighting. Suddenly Clara throws a shoe at the Mouse Queen and it’s over. The mice retreat and the soldiers rejoice!
